Creating an AD/HD Friendly Classroom

Currently, AD/HD is dealt with in the classroom through individual plans for each student diagnosed with AD/HD – creating a nearly impossible task for the classroom teacher. Instead, Dr. Nadeau, proposes teaching teachers how to make the classroom itself an AD/HD – friendly experience. What’s good for students with AD/HD is good for the entire class. This presentation will present a range of ideas of how to help students with forgetfulness, how to help build better organizational habits and how to promote good executive functioning skills in the classroom setting.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Cite the neurology of inattention and how it affects classroom functioning.
  2. List the elements of ADD-friendly vs. ADD-toxic teaching.
  3. Distinguish how different teaching techniques are more helpful with inattentive type students vs. hyperactive/impulsive students.
  4. Describe how teachers can make classroom-wide “accommodations” to help all students, but especially those with AD/HD deal with restlessness, forgetfulness and disorganization.
  5. Identify techniques to build the learning of Executive Functioning Skills into the daily curriculum.
